Why Are We So Afraid to Mix Our Personal and Biz Lives?

This has often been an issue I’ve struggled with over the years in running my business, especially when I first started. I was afraid of mixing my personal and business lives.

Now, let’s start at the beginning and define what I mean by personal and business lives. By your personal life, I mean your 9-5 day job, your friends and family circles, your partner. By business life, I mean your business or your side hustle.

When I first started my business, I was afraid to put it out there and afraid to share it with those in my personal life for a number of reasons.

Fear of Failure

I was afraid of starting a business, sharing it with my inner circle, only for it to be one of the 50% of businesses that doesn’t make it in the first year. Or whatever that statistic is determined to put a damper on anyone’s business ideas.

Fear of Judgement and Assumptions

A big fear I had, and the reason I kept my business initially hidden from a lot of people, was the fear of judgement from others. I feared that friends and family would say that I didn’t have enough skills or I didn’t have what it takes to be in business. I feared work colleagues and my employer would assume I didn’t want to work with them anymore, which wasn’t the case at all. I now know that judgment from others comes from their own insecurities and fears and we need to make an effort to share our super powers with the world.

Fear of Success

On the other side of the coin, fear of success is a real thing. I also used to get afraid of success and what other people would think of me. Would they think of me as ‘too big for her boots’ or like I didn’t deserve the success that I got.

All of these fears may sound completely irrational, but the reality is that many business owners are facing these same fears when it comes to sharing their passion or business with their colleagues, friends, families and even partners.

I want you to know that it’s okay for you to feel these things. It’s only natural to want to protect yourself from harm and hurt. But your business deserves to be shared, and shared in a way that you can be proud of.
